Standard US pricing for online card payments: 2.9% + 30¢, plus 1.5% for international cards and 1% if currency conversion is needed. Stripe rounds each fee to the cent, so real statements can differ by a cent or two. Outside the US, Stripe’s rates are different: check the pricing page for your country.

Stripe’s fees in the US, in plain words
Stripe charges nothing to set up and nothing each month on its standard pricing. It takes a percentage and a fixed amount from each successful payment, and adds to that in a few situations.
| What | Fee |
|---|---|
| Online card payment, US card | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| International card | +1.5% |
| Currency conversion needed | +1% |
| Card number typed in by hand | +0.5% |
| ACH Direct Debit (bank payment) | 0.8%, capped at $5 |
| Dispute (chargeback) | $15 each |
| Stripe Billing, for subscriptions (pay as you go) | 0.7% of billing volume |
| Stripe Tax, where you are registered | 0.5% per transaction |
From stripe.com/pricing and Stripe’s published rates, checked 28 September 2026. Stripe changes its pricing from time to time, and large businesses can negotiate custom rates.
Why small payments cost more than you think
The fixed 30¢ is what hurts. On a $100 sale it is barely noticeable, but on a $5 sale it is most of the fee. Here is what Stripe’s standard 2.9% + 30¢ comes to as a share of the price:
| Price | Stripe fee | Share of the price |
|---|---|---|
| $5 | $0.45 | 8.9% |
| $10 | $0.59 | 5.9% |
| $25 | $1.03 | 4.1% |
| $50 | $1.75 | 3.5% |
| $100 | $3.20 | 3.2% |
| $500 | $14.80 | 3.0% |
If you sell cheap things, bundle them, or sell a pack instead of single items. For large invoices, ACH Direct Debit is capped at $5, so a $2,000 invoice costs $5 by bank payment instead of $58.30 by card.
How to work out what to charge
To receive an exact amount after Stripe’s fee, add 30¢ and divide by 0.971. To receive $100: ($100 + $0.30) ÷ 0.971 = $103.30. The calculator above does this for whatever price you type, including the extras you tick. Check whether passing fees on to buyers is allowed where you sell before you add a surcharge line.
Questions people ask
How much does Stripe charge per transaction?
In the US, 2.9% + 30¢ for each successful online card payment. International cards add 1.5%, currency conversion adds 1%, and cards typed in by hand add 0.5%. There is no setup fee and no monthly fee on standard pricing.
What does Stripe charge for international cards?
An extra 1.5% on top of 2.9% + 30¢, so 4.4% + 30¢. If the payment also needs converting to another currency, add another 1%, making 5.4% + 30¢.
How do I calculate the Stripe fee backwards?
To receive a set amount, add 30¢ and divide by 0.971 (one minus 2.9%). For $100 you charge $103.30. If extra percentages apply, subtract them too before dividing.
Is Stripe cheaper than Gumroad or Lemon Squeezy?
On fees, yes: 2.9% + 30¢ against Gumroad’s 10% + 50¢ plus card fees, or Lemon Squeezy’s and Paddle’s 5% + 50¢. But those three are merchants of record and handle sales tax and VAT for you. With Stripe you handle tax yourself, or pay 0.5% for Stripe Tax to calculate and collect it.
A checkout on your own Stripe account, bought once.
ReplaPay runs payment links and checkout pages on your own server and your own Stripe account, so the only fee on a sale is Stripe’s. It also takes crypto into your own wallet. $299 once, with no percentage of your sales.
